I had to learn to love her. Completely. Unabashedly. Paying her attention every time she cries out. That little girl inside. I wasn’t raised in a structured environment. Both my parents giving in to addictions. Completely blinded by the smokescreens our society throws at us. Buying into things. Therefore selling what they bought into, to their children. Positive feedback was whimsical. Attention given was negative and ineffective. It left a bottomless well inside of me. Yearning for… name it. Always yearning. And that little girl inside. Feeling unprotected. Abandoned. Near the verge of

“ The little match girl”. A story by Hans Christian Andersen. A moving tragedy about how our imagination allows us to find reprieve in the daily hardships of life yet also driving home the point of taking on personal responsibility. Learning to love that little girl inside has allowed me to take ownership of my arena. But more than that. To master myself. So when she shows, at times still breaking down the door with her demanding entrance, I welcome her. Openly. Not afraid (of her) anymore. Not hiding behind anyone’s skirt tails. Until she is comforted in the knowledge that she is loved.
