Schlussstrich

There are certain words in any language that can’t be translated accurately or completely into English. Schlussstrich is one of them. Google it and it loosely translates into - Draw a line.

But it’s so much more than that.

Schlussstrich means that you are drawing the absolute, finite line to any and all bullshit that you’ve put up with or have allowed to go on. That no matter how you twist or turn it, no matter what else you add or take away from the equation, the end result is and will always remain the same. There is no changing it. It’s a matter of accepting it and moving forward from this point on.

Once you have drawn your Schlussstrich, there is NO going back. Ever. It’s a part of your historical chapter that you most likely will not even revisit to consult yourself on for any current issue in your life.

I know plenty of people who are rather whimsical in their decision making process of cutting people off. And I’m more inclined to believe that these whimsical people doing that sort of cutting are actually the ones you really don’t want to have any ties with. For this premature and immature cutting off ties would never allow for any lasting growth. Those are the people who decorate their living space with plastic plants because they can’t be bothered with the effort and love it takes to make real things grow.

But if you have poured your heart and soul into something, made adjustments and adaptions, rearranging things and bending things, and NO growth has yielded from your efforts, it is time to do your Schlussstrich ziehen. Re-plow that field and maybe you have to leave it laying barren for a while. But eventually what is meant to grow from your efforts will show in the end.
