Anam Cara- Soul Friend

The Celtic spiritual belief of souls connection and bonding

According to John O’Donahue, an accomplished Irish poet, philosopher and Catholic priest, “..You are joined in an ancient and eternal union with humanity that cuts across all barriers of time, convention, philosophy and definition. When you are blessed with an anam cara, the Irish believe, you have arrived at that most sacred place: home.”

I had this interesting response from someone in regards to my beingness. It was expressed with kindness and goodwill, but it just sort of struck a chord with me.

Like the majority of us, I used to buy into this soulmate thing. As we each are yearning to deeply connect with someone on such a level that we are understood without words. And I don’t have an issue with anyone believing in the soulmate theory of that there is a perfect match out there for them. “The one”. Remember my motto, live your life to the fullest and in the way of your choosing.

But for me personally, my beliefs have changed a lot about quite a few things. One of them is the Soulmate belief. I have come to experience that I can make a soulful connection with just about anyone as long as I allow myself to be open to the experience. Of course I do connect with some in much more lovelier ways than others. But if it’s a given that we are eternal, and we are all one, we are all from the same source, then anyone of us can connect to another on a meaningful level. I have made extremely brief, yet profound connections with people in every day encounters. And no, I do not have the expectation for them to stick around until I die or thereafter. It’s a bit confusing to believe that a soulful connection mandates the promise of eternity. The only one I recall promising eternal life at his side is Jesus.

I have come to such a deep gratitude for anyone who permits me a glimpse of their soul. There are many people I encounter, who I recognize as fragmented pieces of myself, during those glimpses. The “ no words needed” mutual understanding of what is happening in that moment. I acknowledge them as a soul friend during that exchange. And what else do we have after all, but simply each moment until we arrive at that most sacred place of “home”.
