Happiness is not a competition

I have had these synchronistic conversations lately with all sorts of different people. The key component coming to the surface, as our talks go from nothing to something, seems to always turn into a variation of happiness. Here is where it gets a bit gritty. What truly is YOUR definition of happiness?

Happiness originally was associated with good fortune and prosperity. Now it is defined as a state of well-being and contentment. A pleasurable or satisfying experience.

A few weeks back one of my classmates made a side comment on how she had had a really bad day because nothing went as planned. I was so perplexed by that. What you plan is actually what is only in your head, and you hope that it plays out just like that in reality. But then it never does. Does it? As usual, I couldn’t help myself and laughed out loud. She looked sort of offended when I did. So I told her my entire life didn’t go as planned. Yet I am here in the middle of it, living it to the fullest. I dropped “plan making” in my head. It’s fantasy world. Instead I choose to stay open to the moments as they come at me and for me. No longer do I come for the moments.

Which leads to the next couple of conversations with different people shortly after that. It was more about being spiritual and grounded. And the desire to bring spiritual awareness to other people. Which we all know can not be done. The famous “ You can lead the horse to the water but you can’t make it drink” quote. I have no issue with people attempting to spread spiritual awareness, as I myself seemed to be on an extended quest to be shown just that. But every person I have encountered on said quest has only shown me one thing for sure. There is no singular answer for any one of us.

It appears that the more we are seeking, the further we actually get away from it. We have the choice to encapsulate ourselves either physically by choosing to live apart from anything that triggers us. You know, those retreats you attend, and everyone seems to be so serene. Yet at the slightest invasion of “Life” with all its stressors, you can see how un-serene underneath it all everyone truly is. Or we can encapsulate ourselves by living in denial about the reality we live in as we are still surrounded by "Life". You know, the people who can’t confront what makes them uncomfortable, so they live under that thick layer of everything is love and peace. Whilst suffocating underneath all that caked on fake serenity.

Or we can choose to be in the moment. No matter how gritty each moment is. We still get to choose if we take joy from it or not.
