There was something so familiar, yet curiously strange and exciting about him. He was already talked about before he met him. The people who encountered the new guy during the hiring process, returned back to the department saying things like: wait until you meet this guy. He wasn't impressed by that. He was perfectly capable of forming his own opinion without being influenced by others' input. Things in general were never what they were described to him. It was simply the more or less colorful dramatization of someone's perspective on life. The first morning they met, he gave the new guy a hearty smack on his shoulder and said "take a good whiff and get used to it, you and I will have to work together closely on this project". The new guy grinned from ear to ear, exposing a brilliant smile with an enticing dimple in his left cheek. His erect posture relaxed a little. His project partner was the first person he had met, since signing on with the company, who exuded a warm casualness about him. The stifling properness of anyone else he had encountered so far at his new job almost made him second guess his decision to take the position. The two of them hit it off right off the bat. They made heads turn when they walked in the hallways together. They indeed made for a visually handsome couple. The new guy was tall and sinewy, his dirty blond hair with its natural highlights falling right above his green-blue eyes. The color varied according to what people thought was the color of his clothes, but the color of his eyes actually changed based on his emotional state. The more emotion he felt, the bluer his eyes became. He, on the other hand, looked the complete opposite. He was shorter and broader in stature, his olive skin was a beautiful contrast to the new guy's pale coloring. His dark brown eyes almost appeared to be black. His slender fingers had perfectly manicured nails and despite the soft feel of his skin, the grip of his handshake indicated that he was in control. Their workstyles blended beautifully and they made good progress. The new guy was glad that he was assigned to work with him. It wasn't just his professional expertise he appreciated, but much more his very likeable personality and his open welcome. Near the end of the completion of their project, he asked him out for drinks to celebrate. The new guy happily accepted. They went to a bar close by after work. After dinner and a few drinks the new guy invited him to his place. "We can have more drinks at my place and you can crash there since we don't have to work in the morning." So they continued their celebration at the new guy's apartment. They settled down in the living room and after enough talking started to watch a late night movie. He fell asleep on it halfway through. He couldn't even remember falling asleep. He awoke in the embrace of the new guy. Startled, he tried to recall if anything had happened between them before he had fallen asleep but he was sure that nothing had happened. Yet. His movement awoke the new guy, who began to caress him in all the right places. He was immediately aroused and couldn't put up any resistance even if he would have tried. Their passionate lovemaking lasted until the early morning hours, until they fell asleep in each other's arms. Their affair blossomed from that night forward. He was head over heels in love, feelings that he had wanted to keep in check to maintain a professional relationship, had suddenly taking over his entire being. They both completely understood to keep their relationship at work as a complete separate entity. Either of them had too much to lose if any accusations of fraternisation would be put forth against them. At times he was surprised how cool and levelheaded the new guy could be at work when all he could do is to keep his passion for him in check, so as not to give away anything. As their first year anniversary began to near, he had made up his mind to ask him to move in together. He was one hundred percent committed. He had never felt that way about anyone in his life before. In order to make it a reality, he began looking for another job with a different company so their personal relationship wouldn't compromise their professional careers. Since he was such a valuable candidate, it didn't take him long to find a comparable position with potential for growth. He was so excited he made reservations at one of the best restaurants in town to ask his lover to move in together, and to tell him about taking a new job so neither of their careers would be compromised. As they began to enjoy their exquisite dinner, he said with a big smile on his face "I have some news for you". His lover of almost a year looked at him with those intriguing green-blue eyes and said "so do I, if you don't mind, let me go first". Thinking that he must have had the same sentiments of taking their relationship to the next level, he replied "sure, go ahead". He couldn't wait to see that look on his lover's face when he would tell him that he also wanted to move in together with him and that he already secured a new job, so they wouldn't experience any repercussions at work. His lover's eyes went dark blue as he opened his mouth and said " I have found someone I want to have a family with. We've been seeing each other on and off since college and she's finally ready to make a commitment, so I proposed to her. We are set to get married in a couple of months. It's best for us not to see each other anymore." His heart went cold in an instant. He had been so oblivious. He would have never suspected for his lover to cheat on him. "Does she know about me? About us?" he managed to stammer. His lover replied "yes, but it doesn't matter to her, she knows I'm breaking it off with you. She knows I love her above all else and she also knows that having a family has always been my dream". He noticed the look he received by his reply and added "I mean my own family, not through any alternative means." Shellshocked, he couldn't do anything but stare at the man who he thought had loved him. His lover cooly looked at him, his eyes changing back to a light green, and said "I'm sure I don't have to ask you to keep up with your professional behavior at work the way we have been doing for the last year." He just shook his head in disbelief and replied "you don't have to worry about that, I'm starting a new job in a couple of weeks". His lover looked relief when he heard that. Feeling sick to his stomach from the betrayal, he rose from the table and said "funny how you think you know someone so well because of what you want to believe about them. I wish you the best." With that he walked out, not to ever see him again. After the devastatingly heartbreaking news, he decided to resign immediately, since his new employment was already secured. A couple of years later he ran into an old co-worker who broke the news about his ex-lover. " you know what happened to that blonde handsome fellow you used to do those projects with?" his old co-worker asked. He raised one of his eyebrows as he looked at his old co-worker quizzically "nope, I haven't been in touch with anyone since I left" he replied. His co-worker shook his head in what appeared to be disbelief and said "Well, they were trying to get him sentenced to life for killing his pregnant wife, but he killed himself first. He thought he could get away with it because he made it look like an accident, but they had too much evidence on him. His wife's longtime lover came forth with a lot of information that lead to the investigation. Supposedly she only married him for his money and that unborn child wasn't his, but the lover's child. I was surprised that he would be that oblivious, I would have thought him to be smarter than that. I guess you think you know someone but you only know what you believe about them." He was taken aback by the news, but not completely shocked. Nodding his head he replied

" that's so true, you only know what you believe."
